PERENNIAL FAVORITES GARDENER FOR TRIAL GARDEN
Reports to: Adrea Dent, Director of Perennial Growing Operations
Role
The Gardener will work to help plant and maintain the annual and perennial trial garden and the stock garden. The stock garden is used for plant material for production. Planting will include working with the Annual and Perennial growers to layout and install plants throughout the garden. Maintenance will include pruning, deadheading, checking watering needs and weeding. The trial gardens are used to trial new plants in the trade and new introductions and as a way to showcase the diversity and quality of plants that Perennial Favorites grow.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Planting/Layout
a. Work with Annual team to layout and Plant trial garden in the spring
b. Work with Perennial team to gather and layout Perennial trial garden throughout the summer - Maintenance
a. Cutting back, pruning and deadheading plants as needed to promote growth, keep plants
b. Weekly weeding monitoring weeds to alert growers when spraying is needed
c. Ensuring plants are watered and drip is working
d. Regularly monitoring crops for disease and pests and notify growers for treatment
e. Fall clean up to cut back perennials and remove annual garden - Plant Labels and identification
a. Ensure that plants in all the gardens are labeled
b. Work with growers to update trial garden list and track varieties
Schedule and Pay
This is a flexible position 8-12 hours a week or more during planting. Coordinate with growers weekly to plan planting and maintenance schedule. This is a seasonal position May to September/October depending on weather
and planting needs.
