From The Desk Of Bill Varga

Victor Lemoine, could be your neighbor, but this extremely crafty horticulturist was born almost 200 years ago in France. As a young man, he established himself as florist and gardener at Nancy, France. With an understanding of the potential of plant hybridization and selection, he developed some of the first hybrid double flowered Portulaca, Fuchsia, zonal Pelargonium and many other firsts for plant enthusiasts. Maybe take a moment look deeper into Victor Lemoine’s life and work. For us here in Utah, Victor Lemoine is connected through his use of our native Littleleaf Mock Orange, ‘Philadelphus microphyllus’ and ‘P. coronarius’ to create ‘Philadelphus x Lemoinei’. You may have noticed the ‘X’ between genus and specific epithet in botanical names to signify hybrid. ‘Avalanche’, said to be the most fragrant selection of this cross, grows to be 4x4’ which retains the parent Littleleaf Mock Orange smaller stature. Most important to us gardening in the intermountain west, it also retains its parent’s propensity for water efficiency! We have grown the Lewis Mock Orange and the Littleleaf this past season at Perennial Favorites. Hopefully, we will be able to continue this trend of adding beauty, fragrance and water efficiency as options to intermountain gardeners.
