From The Desk Of Bill Varga

One of the first hardy potted ‘Grocery Store’ plants to hit our Utah markets is the Primrose. The compact foliage and profuse dome of red, yellow, blue or pink flower colors are irresistible. Most are purchased too early to be placed outdoors. Be patient! Deadhead and set aside with an occasional soaking till late April or early May. Plant outdoors in shade to semi-shade where they may get irregular deep watering. Remember, these horticulturally selected varieties originated in the wild, often at high elevation where they thrive in well drained soils. You can visit wild cousins of our cultivated varieties on summer walks to the areas around our ski resorts. Parry’s Primrose blooms in July in Albion Basin just above the Alta and Snowbird Resorts. You may also see “Pretty Shooting Star”, another of our natives in the Primrose group. Last year after the UNLA trade show, I brought home several Primrose, “Amethyst Ice” (violet), “Buttercup” (rich buttery yellow), and “Valentine” (red). They were deadheaded and tended indoors until planted outdoors by our north-facing front steps. They re-bloomed in June. Get the most out of your purchase or if you’d rather, just come on back and buy some more. It’s less expensive than other habits!

YOU’RE NO LONGER COOL WHEN…..

You find yourself listening to talk radio.

The pattern on your shorts and couch match.

You fondly remember your powder blue leisure suit.

You actually ASK for your father’s advice.

You don’t know how to operate a fax machine.

When someone mentions SURFING you picture waves and a surf board.

You remember the “Rolling Stones” as a rock group not a corporation.

You turn down free tickets to a concert because you have to work the next day.

You bought your first car for the same price you paid for your kid’s new running shoes.

When jogging is something you do to your memory.

Rocking all night means dozing off in your rocking chair.

Yeah some of you know that these apply to you…. And for the rest, your day will be here sooner than you think!
